Four Sports Teams I Hate

First, since this is my first entry here of my lists of four let me explain.  Why make a list?  Because people love lists.  It’s true ask around.  Why four?  Three doesn’t seem like enough and I’m creative enough for five, so four just feels right.  So with no further ado….Four sports teams I hate in no particular order.

sfgiants San Francisco Giants.  I know I said in no particular order and that will be true from now on but this is my biggest hatred.  I wish nothing but failure upon anyone who plays for, coaches or owns this team.  My hatred burns especially hot for Barry Bonds.  Why you ask?  Simple I grew up a Dodger fan when rivalries still meant something and it sticks with me to this day.  THINK BLUE!!!!!

spurs San Antonio Spurs.  It’s the flopping Manu Ginobili,  The cry baby Tim Duncan, the genius Gregg Popovich, and most especially the fans.  We have a joke around the editing department that we want to build a wall not a the US Border but around San Antonio to keep their fans there and away from annoying us.   GO MAVS!!!!!!!!!!!!

Boston_Celtics Boston Celtics.  This is a tough one for me because I really have no hatred for the current crop of C’s.  I kinda like the Boston Three Party.  I’ve always like KG and Ray Allen and a healthy respect for Paul Pierce.  My hatred goes to the 1980’s and the Showtime Lakers.  I grew up in suburban LA so of course I grew up a Laker fan.  Larry Bird, Kevin McHale, and “the chief” Robert Parish no there’s a trio of Celtics I can hate without regret.   GO Kurt Rambis!!!!!!!!

pats.logo.sal New England Patriots.  Come on! How can anyone who did not grow up a Patriot fan possibly like these guys.  Spygate.   Bill Belichick. Bill Belichick.  Cocky fans, Bill Belichick.  Ok I think my real reason for hating the Pats is showing.  Belichick with is cutoff sweatshirts, his one word answers, his spying on other teams and being unapologetic about it,with his no class (see walking off the field at the end of the Super Bowl with time still remaining because they lost).  I hate this guy.    GO COWBOYS!!!!!!!

BONUS COVERAGE:  I hate that everytime the Yankees and the Redsox play each other we have to act like it’s a national holiday.   GO RANGERS!!!!!

Weekend Sports

desperados Let’s start with Friday and the disappointment that the Dallas Desperados have brought the Metroplex.  Not since the fumbled field goal or the collapse against the Miami Heat has Dallas/Ft Worth be destroyed by a sporting event as when the Desperados after another fine regular season  suffer another first round loss, by getting beaten by the New York Dragon 77-63.  Okay maybe not.  Most people in the city had no clue this was going on, but I have a strange affinity for the fringe sport.  Yet I can’t get into soccer, I’m not sure what that says about me or soccer but that’s the way it is.

nascar logo

In NASCAR Kurt Busch wins at Loudon in the LENOX Industrial Tools 301.  I didn’t get a chance to watch this race.  Too bad because it sounds like it was a pretty good one.  My guy Kyle Busch finished in 25th not so good, but he is still atop the points lead.

texaslogo How about them Texas Rangers.  They took 2 out of 3 from the Phillies.  The big news is Chris Davis who came up Friday from AA Frisco and has contributed in big ways already.  The cueshot first big league hit on Friday to his 2 homeruns in his second and third games.  What I have really liked though was his defense.  He has made some tough plays at first.  I know Ron Washington has said that when Blaylock is ready he will take over 1st base duties, but if Davis Keeps playing this way the Homies better be ready to travel to wherever Hank gets traded.

GO RANGERS!!!

Podcast of the Week

100px-BOLLogo I know I should have posted this yesterday and I am already shirking my duties, I will however have two posts today to get back on schedule.

First off let me tell those of you who don’t know what a podcast is what it is.  A podcast is a program either audio or video that is automatically delivered to you via RSS.  Most use iTunes for this I prefer Microsoft’s Zune player.  I have both but prefer my Zune over my older ipod by a mile.

Anywho my podcast of the week is Buzz Out Loud.  This is a daily tech news podcast produced by CNET.  They present the day’s news with a sense of humor, outrage and geeky awareness that makes it my favorite podcast.  Another thing that makes this a great podcast is they have a very dedicated and active audience.  There is an active message board around the show.  They have there own wiki for show notes and stuff.  Another cool thing is you can watch the show being recorded live while chatting with other listeners. The real cool thing about that isn’t the watching them record it’s the extra stuff before and after the show that doesn’t make the podcast.  They will respond to people in the chatroom and answer goofy personal questions it’s a lot of fun.

I know that it’s a little bit cheating to use my favorite podcast as my first podcast of the week, but hey it’s my blog and I’ll cheat if I want to.

I can’t believe this is real!!!

Tech Week in Review

  • The big story of the week is of course is Bill Gates reaching his semi-retirement date and giving up day to day control of Microsoft.
  • ICANN has approved a new naming system relaxing the rules that has brought us .com .org and .net.  We will see things like .sport or .news or something like that.  Businesses will be able create their own domains.

  • Hometown airlines American has started a pilot program to provide wi-fi on planes.  This from Boing-Boing

“Lucky passengers on an American Airlines flight from JFK to Los Angeles tomorrow (Wednesday, June 25, 2008) will be the first commercial flyers to access high-speed, in-flight Internet service since the shutdown of Boeing’s Connexion service in 2006. Tomorrow’s flight is a round-trip test before a full-blown pilot program starts up and runs 3 to 6 months on all of American’s 767-200 equipment — 15 aircraft in total — wending their way from JFK to SFO, LAX, and Miami.”

  • Nokia has bought the Symbian operating system.   This is the operating system that is on all Nokia phones.  The big deal about this is that Nokia is going to make the OS open source, allowing developers to change the OS.  This will become a big competetor to Google’s Android mobile OS when it comes out at the end of the year.

Posting Schedule

In an effort to make posting a more regular event here at The Edit Bay, I am creating a schedule of topics to post on daily.  Here’s hoping this works.

Monday: I’ll posting about the sports weekend

Tuesday: Top 4.  It will a list of four things about misc. things.

Wednesday: Inside Baseball.  Some sort of insight into what goes on in a newsroom.  Don’t worry bosses I want post any secrets 😉

Thursday: News story.  I’ll talk about a story from the week that caught my for whatever reason whether it be serious, funny or informative and give my take on it.

Friday: Tech week in Review.  I warned you I am a geek and Fridays will when I completely geek out.

Saturday: Weird Web.  Something from the web that made me laugh, an article, a picture or video, not sure what but it will be fun.

Sunday: Podcast of the Week.  As a geek I enjoy podcasts so I will try to give a new one a week that is informative, funny or just plain weird.  Stay Tuned.

This won’t be all I’m posting, if anything strikes my fancy at anytime I’ll post that too.  These topics will be the minimum that I am going to aim for.

Wish me luck

Somebody Slept through economics

So the idea of drilling for more oil was floated last week with the idea that more oil (higher supply) in the market would lower the price of oil.  Now from what I remember from economics class that seems to make since.  But some in Congress seem to have forgotten the laws of supply and demand.  For example  Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.) said

“I also think we need to be honest with the American people,” Durbin said. “If we made the decision today to drill offshore, it would be eight to14 years before the production and the net impact on the price of a gallon of gasoline would be negligible.”

So let me get this strait If the idea of pumping more oil is going to take on the short end eight years to take effect in the market, then why does it take less than a day to jump up the price of oil on the mention of a possible cut in production

NEW YORK (AP) — Oil futures shot above $140 Thursday after OPEC’s president said crude prices could rise well above $150 a barrel this year and Libya said it may cut oil production. The advance raised the likelihood that gasoline prices would also extend their march higher, and that prices of goods and services throughout the economy would also keep rising.

Maybe I’m an idiot (and I probably am)  but why is one true and the other not.  It seems simple more supply = lower prices

less supply = higher prices

But what do I know.

"Statecation"

This is what one of my co-workers called my time off last week.  It is defined as a vacation where someone stays within their state.  This is something I accuse my co-worker Brad of doing on all of his vacations, except his would be called citycation since he never leaves Arlington.  As someone who is not a native Texan (don’t worry I have an anchor baby,my son IS a native Texan), it is nice to travel the great state of Texas and get a feel of some of the great things it has to offer.

First on our “Statecation” we went down to South Texas and stayed in cottage Bayview, TX.  We stayed in this awesome little cottage right on Galveston Bay.  This was the view from the deck.  It goes down to the bay, it has a fishing dock where in the morning you can literally see fish jumping out of the water.  We were unfortunately ill prepared for such an under taking as we brought fishing gear but no bait.  So we caught no fish at the cottage and since we were only staying one night no fish here.  We also went tofish Galveston Island and where my son had the time of his life jumping and swimming in the waves of the ocean.  He had been to the ocean one other time in California, but he was like three at the time so he doesn’t really remember it much, but boy he had the time of his life.  We finally did catch a fish at the Galveston pier.  What a great time we had, my son wants to go back next week, I told him that that probably not going to happen, maybe later this summer.  On the way back from South Texas we ran into something drive in that I had thought was extinct, the drive in movie theater.  Just north of Ennis on HWY 45 sits the Galaxy Drive-in Movie Theater!  It was great, it was just like the old days, the  family piled into the car to watch a double feature of “Indiana Jones” and “Iron Man”.  They even played all the fun animated snack bar films.  It really took me back to my childhood.

Also on our Statecation we went to some things around our very own Metroplex.  We went to the Dallas World Aquarium which was a lot of fun, my son loved the jaguar they have there and all the other animals.  Then we stepped up the sunburn factor to 10 and went to Hawaiian Falls.  The boy had a great time, me I just got sunburned (yes I put on sunscreen) and water logged, but I did keep cool so it was a nice afternoon.

And finally Saturday we went to the Devil’s Bowl Speedway.  You have to understand after seeing the Pixar movie “Cars” (great movie, even if it is an animated version of the movie “Doc Hollywood”) my son has fallen in love withTMS racecars and really specifically NASCAR.  So we have been to Texas Motor Speedway where he got to get his picture taken standing on the start/finish line.  And now we have gone to the Devil’s Bowl to see dirt track racing sprint car and get his picture taken inside a sprint car.  See that Eddie Gossage you had better step your game he may go sprint cars all the way.  (not a chance).  But here’s the thing when it all started I said I was doing it all for him and it was true, but now I have really started to enjoy the art of turning left.  It pains me to say such things but it is the truth, just trying to keep it real.  What’s next? Watching FC Dallas?  Thank God, my son doesn’t like soccer.

I hope you have enjoyed my recap of my Statecation.  I hope you take your own soon.  Our state has a ton to offer, with the craziness of the airlines now is the time to enjoy the Lone Star state.

Rock Paper Scissors

Rock Paper Scissors is more than a decision making game for the editors at NBC5, it is a way of life, a form of competition that has taken many forms and many reasons for playing.  We simply refer to it as RPS.  Need to decide who edits something, RPS, need to see who works overtime, RPS, need to blow off some steam stick out your fist and call out “LETS GO!!!!”  Usually a fist or four will peek out of an edit bay and ready to take up for themselves.  One of our editors Raul has even created phone RPS, you simply get a phone call with someone on the other end who proclaims a war with a simple question of “Ready?” then a countdown “3..2..1..Rock” and then either cheer or jeer depending on the others attack.  It has become at times part luck, part mind game, where a player will imitate a flamingo and kiss his hand or someone might impersonate Axl Rose and his snake dance.  We have played over Instant Message, face to face, reflection in our glass doors and every other possible way.

Amazingly we aren’t the only people that have such a passion for RPS.  There is a World Championship every year in Canada.  A US federal judge even once ruled in a court case that the two parties solve a contentious point in a disputed contract by a game of RPS

Trust me we don’t need a federal judge to tell the editors that it’s RPS time.

I just lost.  Paper beats Rock!!!!  Dang it!!!!

I’m going to take my ball and go home.

So I have seen a story that makes me laugh so I had to post a second entry for the day.  This according to Liz Smith in the New York Post:

SUSAN SARANDON, who appeared in three films last year and won kudos for her TV movie “Bernard and Doris,” is still not a contented soul. She says if John McCain gets elected, she will move to Italy or Canada. She adds, “It’s a critical time, but I have faith in the American people.”

This makes me laugh because of the long list of celebrities of the past that have made similar claims and still live in the Good Ole U S of A.  Just a few of the previous celebrities that haven’t followed through with their claims. Barbara Streisand, Martin Sheen, Alec Baldwin and  Sarandon’s Better half Tim Robbins.  But Hey don’t think it’s all negative I also read that Johnny Depp will move back the America if Obama wins.

All this to say why do we care who actors, musicians, or Video Editors have to say about who they want or don’t want to be president, what makes their opinions so highly sought after?  Let’s just please look at the issues and find the candidate that best fits your viewpoints.

God Bless America!!
